Idioms Day 💬

This morning was all about English idioms — those clever expressions that don’t mean what they literally say, but instead paint a little picture in your mind to capture an everyday idea. “It’s raining cats and dogs” really means a downpour! The children spent a full, focused morning hunting down the hidden picture behind each one. 💪

📚 What’s an Idiom? From matching to word searches

First, what an idiom even is — a phrase where the words on the surface and the real meaning are two different things. The children matched idioms to their meanings and tracked down expressions hidden inside crosswords and word searches. “Piece of cake”, “Break a leg”, “Cost an arm and a leg” — with every one they learned, their eyes lit up a little more. ✨

Across the walls and tables, the day’s idioms were laid out on individual cards — “Spill the beans”, “Bite the bullet”, “The apple of my eye” and more. The children looked, read, and picked through them until each one started to feel familiar. 📇

📓 Their Own Notebooks A personal idiom journal

And starting today, every student has their very own notebook — a single place where their learning will be collected from now on. Today was the first page: they wrote out the idioms, put the meanings in their own words, built sentences, and even added drawings. 📝

Our youngest ones joined in too — drawing the idioms their own way. One notebook took “It’s raining cats and dogs” completely literally, with actual cats and dogs, and it’s impossible not to smile at it. 💛

Today we spent an intense morning learning some commonly used English idioms — figures of speech that create a word picture to express ideas in everyday life. The students now have their individual notebooks where their work will be compiled. Please ask anytime you would like to view their work. Happy Tuesday everyone 💕

🎯 Idiom Jeopardy Turning the lesson into a game

The highlight of the morning was “Idiom Jeopardy”! Six categories — What does it mean? · Finish the idiom · Situation Challenge · Opposites & Trick Questions · Picture This · True or False — each with points on the line, and hands shot up all over the room. Putting what they’d just learned straight into a head-to-head game had the whole class buzzing. 🔥

🍕 Pizza Lunch Refuelling with pizza

After such a lively morning came the lunch everyone was waiting for — pizza! Pepperoni, Hawaiian and more, fresh out of the box, a hot slice in every hand. Not quite “easy as pie” — more like easy as pizza. 😋

🌳 Park Afternoon A sunny afternoon out

After lunch, off to the park! They lined up side by side on the bench swing in the shade, sprawled back on the green bucket swings, and roamed the whole playground. Plenty of laughter under the summer sun. ☀️

Today’s learning: English idioms — how to read the picture hidden inside a phrase. The children practised through matching, crosswords and word searches, wrote and drew everything into their own personal notebooks, then reviewed it all with a lively round of Idiom Jeopardy.
